The Cemetery of Kanja Sahib, Sholingur

Kanja Sahib Cemetery

This monument is located near a prominent road, opposite the Sholinghur Bus Stand in Sholingur Taluk. Measuring approximately 15 feet in width and 35 feet in length, the monument is known as the Kanja Sahib Cemetery. It is preserved as a protected monument by the Archaeological Department.

The cemetery is constructed using bricks and stucco. It is associated with the Battle of Sholinghur, fought in 1781, during the conflict between the forces of the Kingdom of Mysore and the British. According to local historical tradition, several soldiers who were killed in the battle were buried at this site in a large pit.

An inscription placed at the top of the structure records its historical association and reads:

“This tomb, which is believed to mark the spot where the bodies of the slain of the Mysore Army were interred, is conserved by the Government of India to commemorate the Battle of Sholinghur, 1781.”
